Eiffel tower at Paljas Backpackers

The Wooden Eiffel tower at Paljas Backpackers Bult Cachet Park, Potchefstroom. South Africa

Build on assignment by Sakkie Britton, our professional handyman, for Paljas Backpackers in 1999.

It is completely build out of wooden poles a 1000 screws and only 4 steel 25mm square tubbing and it is 13 meters high.

We meditate for 2 years about this Eiffel tower. We got some pics from the Internet and even got a small wooden model.  At one stage we even wanted to buy a 4 meter iron Eiffel at Parys a nearby town.

Then one morning Sakkie came to me and said he is right to build it now.

He bend the square tubbing against a nearby tree and start building it. He build it lying straight on the ground. When it was finish he used a bakkie to pull it in place. It took 6 weeks to finish.

It is very strong, you can even sit on the first floor or even climb to the top, but we stopped that because of the risk involved.

Our motto at Paljas Backpackers:

To build something out of nothing.
